In case you hadn't noticed, this blog has been defunct since March 2006, when I gave up the editorship of inter alia in favor of the next generation. The next generation decided to set up its own blog at uiinteralia.blogspot.com. And it appears to be at least somewhat active. So rather than look to this blog for extremely dated information about inter alia, please remove the dash and be gone.

In case you had not yet noticed, Issue 10 hit newsstands yesterday. Early, again. How I loathe the unpredictability of the Printing & Design folks.

Because the issue came out early, I have received feedback early. The quantity has been rather higher than usual. Which is nice. And it has been uniformly positive. Which is even better.

Not a bad way for me to go out. Yes, gentle readers, Issue 10 was my last issue as editor. I am handing the reigns over to frequent writer and 2L Jim Bielenberg. Who's contact information is in the dogbook or the student directory. [I would put his email address here, but I don't want to inundate the guy with spam. Or at least, if he is inundated with spam, I don't want to be a contributing factor.] So send all submissions from here-on-out to Jim. [Of course I'll be willing to forward anything for at least the next couple of months.]

I discovered, after looking through a few back issues, that inter alia has been around a little longer than I had originally believed. Apparently the 1999-2000 academic year was the fourth volume. Which means the paper started in Fall of 1996 or Spring of 1997. Wow.

The practical upshot of which is that my prior labeling is incorrect. This academic year represents the tenth volume of inter alia. Perhaps we should celebrate. Perhaps not.

Anyway, the eighth issue of the current academic year, and the second of the Spring semester, is now available for your reading pleasure. Online, of course. The print issue should be available on Wednesday, as per usual.

There seems to be some confusion about when inter alia is published. While it does not hit the newsstand until Wednesday morning (usually), it is invariably compiled on Monday evening. Which is why, all semester, I have set the submission deadline at 5 PM on Monday. Inquiring as to whether you can hand me something on Tuesday morning, or simply assuming you can, is inappropriate. For shame, Mrs. Shapow, Mr. Sheckler, and Mr. Dearing. For shame.

I've posted Issue #5's PDF. Which I would have done anyway. But now it is extra special important. Because, for the first time since I've been editor, all 150 copies were read. At least I hope that's what happened. A little over a day after the issue went out, the library door contained no more copies. It might have been that this issue was unusually popular. It might have been that the library desk screwed up and did not put out enough copies and are jealously hoarding the balance behind the counter. Or it might have been that someone got upset with something that was printed therein and dumped a large number of copies. I have dealt with the third situation before, while an undergrad. It wasn't really my cup of tea. I hope that was not what happened.

I just realized that while I have been meticulously date-stamping each and every issue, I have not been mentioning the volume and issue numbers. Which is because, until right this moment, inter alia has not had volume and issue numbers. That is about to change.

The paper edition of Volume 5, Issue 5, the November 2nd issue, is now on the library door. In fact it has been there since yesterday morning, so you likely have already read it. But nevertheless, it is there. I just checked. There are still dozens of copies left. Which means no fewer 24, for those of you with issues with arithmetic. Not that I counted or anything...

At 11:30 AM on Monday, SBA has arranged to have all the student organizations say a few words to the incoming 1Ls. And, for some reason, inter alia has been included in that presentation. Which means I need to stand up in front of a bunch of 1Ls and say a few words. Lucky me.

I'm planning on publishing the first issue of inter alia on Wednesday, August 31st. So please send submissions to crtaylor@uidaho.edu.

I'd appreciate confessional pieces. A "what I did last summer" diatribe would be welcome. Or a "I've only been here a week, and I'm already sick of law school" rant. Or a "Trial Ad is just another word for purgatory" bitch-fest.

I'll accept pieces which discuss the finer points in some obscure or old-timey legal discipline. The proper color for the saddle according to donkey show law in Texas before and after statehood, for example. Or a discussion of the rise of international admiralty law, the decline of piracy, and the phenomenon known as global warming.

And of course I'll accept any event announcements. I know, for example, that SODA is planning its annual drag show for Friday, September 16. And I'd like any event coverage, even if it is self-serving.

And I'll take anything else that can be printed on paper. Photographs of oversized kittens. The arrest warrant for your great uncle Zachary. A contract for the sale of 1000 widgets. Anything. Unless it sucks. In which case I'll pretend the paper was full, using one clever nom de plume after another, until you're convinced I have an army of writers. Whereas it is often just me and the hundred monkeys, fighting over a single typewriter. Damned expensive ribbons.

But the inimitable Ritchie Eppink sent me a campaign advertisement for the upcoming election last night. And because the election takes place one week from Wednesday, and because Ritchie and Taylor are apparently orating on Monday, I thought it would be nice to publish this week after all.

For whatever reason, I had originally referred to inter alia as being "biweekly." I woke up with a start a few nights ago when I remembered that "biweekly" means "twice a week." Not "every other week," as I had intended.

So I just checked Merriam-Webster Online, and was pleased to discover that "biweekly" in fact does mean "every other week" (as its second definition). So I wasn't, technically, making the ignorant mistake I had thought. Sigh. Rather than breed confusion, however, I thought I should change "biweekly" to read "fortnightly," which is an uncommonly clear word, if a bit archaic. Enjoy.

[Note: I'm sorry about it coming out a shade late. Part of it is Printing & Design's less than regular delivery system. For the last issue, I had it to them on Monday evening, intending it to be delivered Wednesday morning. It was delivered Tuesday afternoon. So this time around, I had it to them Tuesday evening, hoping for a Wednesday afternoon release; instead, it came Thursday morning. I sent out an email to the student body, soliciting submissions. The text of which follows:

Fellow classmates -

I understand that law school, unlike so many other academic pursuits, lacks in challenge and consumes virtually no time. I imagine a number of you end up sipping coffee at Tina's day in and day out, waiting for something interesting to happen while reading biographies of Warren Buffett. I understand.

To help alleviate the monotony, the College of Law publishes inter alia every other week. Many students therefore find certain Wednesdays to be the most exciting day of the bi-week. Maybe you are one of them. Maybe you wish the pleasure inter alia brings could be extended to more than just a few minutes of reading pleasure. Maybe you wish it could consume your every waking hour.

If this sounds like something that might appeal to you, perhaps you should consider writing for inter alia. I know, I know. You are such a good writer that it couldn't possibly provide much of a challenge and will ultimately only kill a minute or two. The solution? To write another article. And another. And another. Until inter alia is so inundated with submissions, it may actually have to decline to publish certain materials for want of space.

Yes, my fellow law students with entirely too much time on her hands, the solution is clear. Write for inter alia and you will never be at a loss for things to do again.

I hate doing this. It makes me feel like a whiny bitch. I took on this publication, and I'll be damned if I'm going to fail to put the thing out every other week, regardless of how much work I have to do. At least that was how I was looking at it.

Sue, the SBA President, apparently feels differently: that there is little reason to publish unless there are a sufficient number of articles (not including my filler) to justify the expense. Which I guess follows from two premises: 1) the value of having inter alia stems from its soapbox status, not from its readability, and 2) a consistent publication schedule is not much of a reason for publishing.

I wish I could see it. I understand the good that comes from having a voice for the law students. But what good is a voice if no one hears it? And without a consistent publishing schedule, there is no readership. Furthermore, there is a good that comes from having something to read that exists independent of the good of having a place to write.

I expect inter alia is something of a special case, and this is where my reasoning goes wrong. Perhaps no one would even notice if inter alia skipped a week. Perhaps no one looks to inter alia to relax for a few minutes. Perhaps it is nothing more than a forum in which to vent and voice controversial opinions. But then it would seem to me all we really need is a message board upon which people can tack their every thought. And then maybe we wouldn't need inter alia at all.

It can be just about anything that can be printed in four pages: a photograph, a drawing, a review of a film you recently saw, a law student's reaction to a piece of legal fiction, a humorous anecdote, a not-so-humorous anecdote, a crossword puzzle, a word find, a piece of legal fiction, a law related news item, a non-law related news item. I'm not at all married to a particular format or direction for the content, so if you have something you think would be good for the College of Law community to read, but doesn't seem to fit, drop me a line. I'm open. But I'm working with only one piece of text so far, which means extra work for me. And I'm lazy. So lazy.

Yesterday I noticed a single sheet publication floating around Menard which contained a response to a piece that appeared in last week's inter alia. I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome the publication, called tabula rasa, into the community fold, and welcome responses to its "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" piece, or the Peter Jones article upon which it based, or any of the prior opinions that were written on the subject, in this week's inter alia.
